JournoTwit Tutorial in 7 Minutes

Over the weekend, Dan and I decided to record a ScreenCam of JournoTwit in action, to demonstrate the main features, with some examples of use. From our experience, most people don't bother to read documentation, so with this - you can sit back and just absorb the information, before logging in and trying it yourself!

Even if you're already a JournoTwit user - it's worth a watch, to see if there is anything you are missing - otherwise, pass this along to your friends so they know what they are missing...

We're back! JournoTwit suffered downtime, but order has now been restored and we have a faster server

Last night our server at UK2 went *pop*. And as with all bad things – they always happen at the worst possible time – just as Spode got on a train to London for the Custom PC/Bit-Tech awards. Being Friday 13th, things didn't go our way.

We tried to get the word out as best we could that JournoTwit was down, but we honestly feel that could have gone smoother. Apologies to those who messaged us in a state of confusion.

A few frantic phone calls later, we decided it was time to move to a new, more powerful server. That's not to belittle the amazing work that UK2 have put in with our old server, they have provided sterling service from day 1 - cheers guys!

The silver lining to this cloud (pun intended) was Clustered.net suggested to us by @tonypiper. Their pricing is phenomenal and after a reassuring 15 minute chat with them on the phone, we went for a pretty speedy package with plenty of flexibility for future development. From our testing – it's shaved a fair amount of time off execution and should cope with any sudden influx of new blood :)

So a big THANK YOU to all our loyal users. We know as much as you how much life sucks without your favourite Twitter client! We just hope you managed without us and found something to do while the server was down...

Unlimited Tweets, Faster Performance

The feature requests are coming in thick and fast for JournoTwit – and we are listening to all of your feedback! Everything is made note of and we will try and implement every request – the order is unknown and largely dependent on “the big picture”.

We're currently working on a related project to JournoTwit which means that the work we are doing has improved JournoTwit – but perhaps not where we might otherwise have moved our focus.

The latest version has moved to using a database rather than the simpler caches we were using before. The immediate upshot of this, is faster response times and currently, no limit on how many tweets will be cached - and how far back they will go. Performing a local search on your main feed in 3 months time for a #hashtag from an event 2 months ago, will actually be able to return to you those results.

We're also now in a much stronger position to implement new features – such as Mark as Read on a per tweet basis, and the ability to view your grid in a time snap shot (last Thursday for example). So look out for this in future Edge editions.

For the moment, enjoy the latest version and report any please report any strange behaviour! Especially those of you using non-Latin character sets :) - Spode

Suggestions and feedback? Head this way... Plus a quick review of this week at JournoTwit

Wow what a week! #Media140 took place in Sydney and saw JournoTwit discussed by Dave Earley during the panel on social media tips and tools for journalists. Thanks very much Dave! The relationship between social media and journalism is still developing, bringing about great change and presenting huge opportunity.

Next up, Fabio Cevasco from h3rald.com has written a superb review of JournoTwit which we're extremely grateful for. From the article:

Maybe it’s just me being a geek, but I think JournoTwit nailed it when it comes to making Twitter more productive: everything just works, and fast, unlike some of its more feature-boasting competitors. I have been using it on a daily basis for weeks, and I’ve never missed a single tweet since (unless I explicitly wanted to do so).

He ends with some helpful feedback and suggests some features he would like to see included in JournoTwit. This gave us an idea...

We've set up a Google Group to bring discussion of Feature Suggestions and Bug Reporting under one roof. Please use this group for any feedback you might have.

Thanks everyone, hope you have a great weekend!

New feature: View TwitPic columns as a slide show!

JournoTwit Edge has a new feature...

We have added the ability to create a slide show of TwitPics!

As an example, and to see it in action, log in to the Edge version of JournoTwit and click the large red + to launch the Add Column wizard. Under Preset Column, launch something like the Cat Pictures column under "Just For Fun". If you edit the column using the pencil icon in the title bar, you'll notice one of the options is "Slide Show".

The column will fetch the latest images from TwitPic and display a new picture every 5 seconds. This delay can be changed in the Settings. Hovering over a picture will halt the transition.

Hope you like it!

JournoTwit - Media140 edition

JournoTwit is proud to be supporting the Media140 conference, taking place in London tomorrow! Media140 is raising money for Mencap - read more about it here.

The best way to keep a check on the pulse of Media140 is to use our bespoke application - Media140.JournoTwit.com

This special edition of JournoTwit has been custom themed and dedicated search columns will track the Media140 #hashtag channel. You will find announcements and updates from @Media140 as well as a column devoted to coverage by the Media140 Bloggers.

Tomorrow's Media140 conference will present and discuss the impacts of real-time social media on branding. The lineup features 16 speakers, all specialists in the leading edge of marketing, branding and consumer engagement.

We hope everyone attending has a fantastic time and look forward to your feedback! Hopefully a "down under" edition of JournoTwit can improve the experience for those attending Media140 in Sydney, Australia.

The Media140 edition of JournoTwit has encouraged improvements to our font colour picking algorithm, making brighter colours more visually pleasing. Regular JournoTwit users will find their configuration remains unaffected by logging in to this edition.

Enjoy!

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Hi Everyone! Whilst I've been busy coding away, Dan has set up this lovely Posterous based blog so I can keep people informed about the latest changes to JournoTwit. Kind of makes sense – right?

Today's release has been over a month in the making and has had a lot more changed that meets the eye. Although visually it's not drastic, you should find faster and more stable than ever before.

You'll notice we have moved away from having a text link menu and you can now access options using icons on the menu bar. This should make things a little easier when on mobile phones. You'll see the Search icon as something new – this is a quick and easy way of creating a new column and once you start using it – you'll wonder how you ever did without it. More on using this on the help page.

Google Translation support has been added, for those that follow non-English speaking people. This can be done on a per tweet basis, automatically for everything – or for a particular users column. This is currently only translating to English – but expect much more development on this aspect in the near future.

As I've explained before, the colour schemes used in JournoTwit are mathematically derived from a single colour. However, this isn't always perfect – especially when the icons are a fixed colour. So there is now an option to match the icon shades to the theme. I'm not a big fan – but several of you are already using it, so...

The AJAX calls have been improved, so will cope much better with flaky connections – especially on mobile phones. In general, mobile performance is significantly better, although we've primarily been testing on the N97.

Black listing has been upgraded so it's not just for #hashtags now. You can black list a phrase, or even people (my favourite!).

By popular demand, there is now an “in reply to” link that fetches the tweet and adds it into the column. It's smart enough to check your current feeds first – so if it's on the page somewhere already – it'll be instant with no API calls!

Another big change is the use of the tweet action bar – there is no longer an @reply/DM button on every tweet – but rather a +. Click this and an action bar comes up below the tweet, allowing you to perform several actions. This might seem a little annoying at first because of the extra click, but it declutters a lot, improves performance and allows us to add many more actions at a later point without worrying about the space it takes up.

There are dozens of minor improvements, bug fixes and changes just waiting to be found and we are now in a much stronger position to develop further features.

A big thanks to all the Edge testers – you are truly amazing! Without them, this wouldn't be such a stable and exciting release :)
